Halloween est au départ une fête celte (irlandais, bretons, écossais sont des celtes) et s'appelle Samhain.. Autrefois, l'année finissait le 31 octobre. Et la nuit du 31 au premier, les esprits des morts de l'année partaient dans l'autre monde.
Ca ne les tentait pas trop et cette nuit là, ils revenaient pour essayer de s'installer dans le corps des vivants.
Bien sûr, les vivants n'étaient pas d'accord.
Alors, cette nuit là, ils éteignaient les lumières et le feu dans leurs maisons pour qu'elles ne soient pas accueillantes et ils se promenaient dans les rues en costumes effrayants, faisaient du bruit et des dégâts pour faire peur aux esprits. Ils allumaient des feux de joie pour aider les morts dans leur voyage et les honorer et aussi les écarter. On sacrifiait aussi des animaux, des fruits et des légumes et, parait-il, parfois quelques personnes que l'on jugeait déjà possédées par les esprits.

Puis les catholiques ont décidé de fêter leurs morts le 1er novembre (la Toussaine) et la fête est devenue all hollow's eve (la veille de tous les saints), ce qui est devenu ensuite halloween.

L'habitude de transformer une lanterne en citrouille vient probablement du folklore irlandais . Un homme nommé Jack, buveur et tricheur, réussit à baratiner le diable et à le faire grimper dans un arbre. Jack grava alors une image de la croix sur le tronc et donc le diable ne pouvait pas descendre. Pour que Jack le délivre, il s'engagea à ne plus le tenter.
Lorsque Jack mourut , on le refusa au Paradis à cause de ses mauvaises manières et en enfer parce qu'il avait roulé le diable. Le diable lui donna une braise pour se guider dans les ténèvres et il plaça la braise dans un navet évidé pour qu'elle dure plus longtemps.
Les irlandais utilisèrent au début les navets pour faire les lanternes d'halloween.
Cuex qui émigrèrent aux états-unis trouvèrent que les rondouillardes et éclatantes citrouille faisaient de bien plus belles lanternes et la tradition évolua

Biographie
En 1997, alors que le groupe est toujours indies, sort leur premier mini-album Missa, qui montre déjà que le groupe, malgré une inspiration certaine tirée des grands du moment (Kuroyume en tête) a déjà un style propre un peu déjanté et sombre, et des titres forts comme Garden ou Byo Shin dans sa discographie. Cependant, ce n'est qu'avec le single I'll et son million de ventes que le groupe décolle vraiment.

En 1999, Dir en grey va devenir un groupe major avec l'arrivée aux manettes de leur nouveau producteur Yoshiki (ex-batteur de X Japan), ce qui constituera un tremplin pour le futur du groupe. Cette même année sort leur premier album, Gauze, déjà très évolué par rapport à Missa, par une meilleure production et des arrangements plus travaillés.

En 2000, le groupe décide de s'auto-produire et c'est avec l'album Macabre qu'on retrouve les cinq musiciens, le disque étant toujours très travaillé et marquant une évolution avec des titres comme 【KR】cube, audrey ou encore des ballades comme Macabre ~sanagi no yume wa ageha no hane~ et zakuro.

Les singles puis les albums se succèdent : Le maxi-single ain't afraid to die, sort en 2001 mais n'apparaîtra sur aucun album. L'album Kisou en 2002 tranche avec ce qu'ils ont fait auparavant et déroute beaucoup de fans, en effet, le style du groupe ne cesse d'évoluer et le son offert par ce nouvel album est plus lourd, moins évident, plus rock. Cependant, et grâce à ses expérimentations avec les sons, le groupe parvient à nous étonner avec des titres comme gyakujou tannou keloid milk, karasu ou encore Pink Killer, mais aussi des titres « plus simples » comme Bottom of the death valley ou les sublimes ballades embryo et mushi.

Au mois de juillet de la même année sortent le maxi-single Child prey et surtout le mini-album six Ugly, qui marque l'apparition d'une influence nouvelle dans la musique du groupe, le néo-metal, ce qui est très perceptible à l'écoute des titres tels que Mr.Newsman, children et surtout la reprise de l'un de leurs premiers titres, Byo Shin.

2003 : les singles Drain Away et Kasumi présagent un nouvel album avec un style encore différent, et ceci se confirme avec la sortie de l'album Vulgar en septembre 2003. Le style est à la fois plus sombre et plus violent que Kisou.

Le maxi-single saku sort en 2004 et contient deux titres nouveaux (Machiavellism étant le deuxième), la troisième piste étant le morceau d'intro explosif utilisé jusqu'à présent en ouverture de leurs concerts, G.D.S.. Et enfin, en mars 2005, après l'ouverture en juillet 2004 de l'antenne européenne de leur label, sort le cinquième album Withering to death., qui sera leur passeport à leur entrée sur la scène des grands. Un album qui montre que le groupe cherche toujours à progresser, mais qui marque peut-être un certain rélâchement dans leur quête d'originalité, malgré des titres tels que Jesus Christ R'n R, dead tree, The Final ou encore C.

Leur popularité ne cesse d'augmenter en France et en Europe, si bien qu'en mai 2005 le groupe faisait leur premier concert à l'étranger, devant 3500 personnes à Berlin, avant d'enchaîner sur l'Olympia à Paris.

Ce nouvel univers musical s'affirme dans leur single de la fin d'année 2005, Clever Sleazoid, possédant un style unique, sorte de néométal torturé et désespéré, où les paroles sont « vomies » et incompréhensibles, sans pour autant tomber dans le ridicule.

Deux singles sortent en 2006, en prévision de l'album à venir. Dans le premier, sorti en juillet, Ryoujoku no ame, littéralement « Pluie d'insultes », le groupe affirme sa maturité et se tourne vers le marché americain tout en gardant les particularités qui ont fait son succès. Puis vient à l'automne le controversé Agitated Screams of Maggots, de part la chanson, beaucoup plus violente que les précédents sorties du groupe, mais surtout son clip, réalisé en image d'animation, pouvant facilement choquer.

En août 2006, Dir en grey se lance dans leur première tournée aux USA à l'occasion du Family Values Tour avec Korn en tête d'affiche. Le buzz ne cesse de croître au États-Unis et l'annonce d'un nouveau single ne le fait pas diminuer.

Le nouvel album The Marrow of a Bone sort début février 2007. Leur son se fait plus lourd, moins sophistiqué et surtout bien occidental. Le tournant musical emprunté ces dernières années s'accentue encore un peu plus, fonçant en plein dans la tendance metalo-hardcore américanisante. S'enchaine une tournée en stand alone aux État-Unis en février, et encore une autre plus tard en juin, en première partie de Deftones, ainsi qu'un détour par l'Europe au mois d'août 2007.

Leur tournée en Europe s'étant achevée avec succès, Dir en grey retourne au Japon et enchaîne sur une tournée de 19 dates nommée Dozing Green, qui débute début septembre et se termine le 20 octobre. Leur dernier single, sorti le 24 octobre, s'intitule aussi Dozing Green

Dir en grey a effectué une courte tournée européenne en novembre 2007, et a donné son plus grand concert oneman en dehors du Japon le 10 novembre au Zénith de Paris.

Dir en grey sortira deux albums best-of pour Noël, le 19 décembre 2007, intitulés Decade [1998-2002] et Decade [2003-2007], comprenant une sélection des chansons depuis leurs débuts en Major
